Project Location: Hollister, CA
Size: 15,000 sf
Architect: Maurice Gagnon Architects
Project Description:
Founded in 1917, the current Library building was built in 1960, where it serves as the hub for a vibrant community. The library is the heart of community life- over 60% of San Benito County residents hold library cards, which are issued free of charge. Delivering far more than book check-outs, the library offers US passport services, computers with internet access, wireless printing, children’s storytime, adult literacy classes, and more seven days a week.
To address aspirations of the City of Hollister to modernize their community services within a net-zero energy library, our proposal for a new home for the San Benito County Free Library offers these solutions: A central atrium to anchor the building spatially, socially and functionally, allows dappled daylight to spill into the center, and move cool fresh air throughout.
Simple materials, and timber columns and beams allow efficient construction and express warmth and familiarity. A curvilinear building form to soften shadows and shade, create outer courts and dynamic spaces, and present a unique formal presence as a civic building.
A formal, symmetrical layout accommodates the different needs of many people, to make it easy for people to navigate, and elevate the experience of arriving and leaving.
The Living Machine system and biophilia were incorporated to blur the border between exterior and interior, to assist cooling through natural ventilation, to treat and re-use water on site.
